Frequently Asked Questions:
What do I need to turn in?
You will be asked to provide a copy your child's California Immunization Record (sometimes called the “yellow card”). If you cannot find your child’s record card, ask your doctor’s office for a copy. Many California medical office and clinics can now update your child’s yellow card automatically using an electronic immunization registry.
What if my child hasn’t been vaccinated?
Visit your local health department to learn about where to go for shots.
Are my child’s shots covered?
By law, California managed care organizations (such as Kaiser Permanente and Blue Cross) must cover recommended immunizations for children. Check with your health plan or your doctor’s office to ask about fees.
If you don’t have health insurance, you may be able to get free immunizations with no copayment. Medi-Cal covers preventative care services for eligible low-income children. Contact your local county social services for more information.
Many private-practice California doctors participate in the federally funded Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, which gives free vaccine to eligible children up to age 18. Ask your child’s doctor if they offer VFC shots.
What does the school do with these records?
Under California Law, schools are responsible for verifying immunization records, keeping them on file, and completing state and local immunization reports. Once you turn in an official immunization record with a doctor’s signature, the school will complete a Blue Card to verify all immunizations have been given. This will be kept on file for each student.
