Thanks to generous support from contributors such as you, we were able to have a four week Waldorf Summer Program for a wonderful group of students in Oakland this summer. The Community School for Creative Education 2010 SUMMER PROGRAM opened its doors June 28 with circle time and song. It ran for a full four weeks June 28 through July 23. Prize winning West Contra Costa / Richmond teacher of the year and acclaimed Waldorf educator Ms. Ana Maria Darson is at the helm. She is joined by design team member, OUSD aide, and teacher-trainee Samantha Lehman as associate. We are grateful to San Antonio's Lake Merritt United Methodist Church for our dwellings right on Lake Merritt. The children ranged in age from three and a half to six and were well represented from the diverse ethnic groups that live in the San Antonio area of Oakland. After an open house where the children shared some of their work--songs and bean bag activities--the president of the board of Alameda County Office of Education said: "I am so filled with joy but my heart is full of a sadness. I know when I leave these rooms and get into my car, I'll be driving through the neighborhoods here full of children who now don't have access to this education." One of our summer program parents shared: "I knew that Community School for Creative Education was the right school for my four year old when, upon realizing that there would be no school the next day as it was a Saturday, she looked at me with such sad eyes and cried out, ‘Why does it have to be so long before I go to school again?’ I have never seen her more alive and joyful than in her four short weeks of CSCE summer school. Those weeks were filled with vibrant, colorful art, creative play, making new friends, practicing Spanish and joyful poems and singing! We are so grateful that she had the opportunity to attend." Now we are working to fulfill the requirements that will allow our conditional approval by the Alameda County Office of Education to become officially approved so we may open our doors in September 2011.
