Letter from the Principal

Monique Brinson

Ms. Brinson has served as principal of Sankofa Academy PreK-8 for the last 8 years. Previous to that, she served as an assistant principal at Fruitvale Elementary in Oakland, and at John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica, California.

Nine of her ten years teaching in Massachusetts was spent as a founding teacher at one of Boston's first elementary pilot schools. She majored in Sociology and Black Studies at Boston College and holds a Masters in Science degree in teaching from Wheelock College. Ms. Brinson received her Principal Credential from the Center for Collaborative Education/Northeastern University, where she took part in the Principal Residency Network (PRN) program, one of the first in the country to implement a "residency model" for administrators. PRN played a key role in developing small/pilot school leaders in Boston.

Ms. Brinson believes in the importance of having a global and growth mind-set. She completed her Certificate for International Leadership Tier II Administrative Services Credential ni Chaing Mai, Thailand through Leadership Innovation: Thailand for School Leaders/UC Irvine. To further develop her Spanish-speaking skills and cultural understanding of students and families she served, Ms. Brinson studied abroad at Cetlalic- a progressive Spanish language school in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Ms. Brinson's hobbies include Shaolin Kung-Fu and Capoeira. She traveled to Drakensberg, South Africa with the international Yang's Martial Arts Association's U.S.A. delegation to study with Master Yang and Grandmaster Lee.
